West Coast Mainline? What's that got to do with immigration and the fight to get FM rules removed?
An e-petition entitled "No to 70 million" has got 142,000 votes. As soon as it went over 100,000 the committee that oversees e-petitions agreed to have a debate in the Commons - 6th September.
The e-petition entitled "Reconsider West Coast Mainline Franchise Decision" has got 151,000. It gained 602 in the last hour.
On Radio 4 this morning Justine Greening the Transport Minister said the signing of the new contract with First Group will go ahead today, meaning that the e-petition result will be brushed aside.
Bottom line is that the Government couldn't care less about e-petitions unless they support their policy. Yes, the committee that decides may well have allowed a debate when Parliament resumes after 3rd September, but the Transport Secretary has decided not to put the signing on hold despite the level of the e-petition vote and a request by the Labour Party to postpone.
Even if we could get over 100,000 signatures we may be wasting our time unless the FM rules are seen by the public as separate from immigration in general.
